Get to know Jesse Labuguen
Meet Jesse Labuguen, one of Apple Dental’s current Oral Health Therapists (OHT). Jesse qualified as an OHT in 2011 from Sydney University and completed his postgraduate studies at the University of Melbourne. His main focuses at the practice include the aesthetic, preventive and restorative aspects of general dentistry.
We spoke with Jesse to learn more about what motivated him to work in dental health, and what he enjoys doing in and out of work.
What sparked your interest in dentistry and oral health?
I loved the thought of making people smile again. And from a young age, with my mum having a background in dentistry, I grew up wanting to do the same. I was always creative in high school but I managed to find a way to be creative in a completely different sphere of life.
Do you have any special interests in your current work at Apple Dental?
At the moment, it’s a fascination about the effects of the airways and the impacts on people’s sleep. Dr Ivan has kindled this interest and in my own perspective, I think there are a lot of things that can be done in relation to the mouth that can help improve the wellbeing of an individual when it comes to sleep.
What have you found is the best way to excite your patients about their dental hygiene?
I think being able to teach them about things they can do, little hacks and habits that can make life easier for them – as well as day time strategies to help in the long run. Habits that can be adapted and changed. New technologies that are available to them that can absolutely be a game changer for them. Taking pressure off and removing blame, instead, understanding and talking about what’s factual is super important.
What do you love about being a part of the Apple Dental Lane Cove community?
Family and community. It’s got that special village vibe. I’m certain it’s transformed over the years – what you want to see is a vibing and thriving lifestyle. Our patients know we do our best to go above and beyond and expect that kind of absolute boutique and personal service.
Also, whether it’s winter or summer, The Canopy in Lane Cove is my favourite lunch spot with its many areas to sit and relax. It can’t be beaten.
How do you like to express your creativity in and out of the practice?
I think about my creativity a lot when I craft a filling, in every shape and size. I always like to find out ‘how’ a person is creative. I really don’t think that’s exclusive to anyone – I think everyone in some way has it in them.
I also love hiking and keeping fit and healthy by going to the gym. I practice a lot of mindfulness as well as getting out there and capturing all nature has to offer. I also play guitar from time to time too!
We know you’re an avid photographer – what’s the best scene you’ve shot?
There was once a sunrise hike in Tasmania, which involved slippery and salty flats – and close to zero temperatures. I always plan and try and catch the mornings when I know a colourful sunrise would be about to show off. Mid way through the hike, the sky started showing candy colours and the moment we hit the summit – it was almost like a 360 degree firework show… Just spectacular!
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I just wanted to say thank you to all my patients, past and present who’ve been with me for a while. For trusting me with your smile and oral health. Really grateful to the team at Apple and I’m absolutely excited for what the team will bring towards the future.
